Similar Music Videos (videos with a storyline)

Both of these videos use a dramatic scene before the music begins. This is to introduce the topic and to give the audience a vivid understanding of the song.

Album front cover

2pac - All Eyes On Me

All Eyez on Me is the fourth studio album by American rapper 2Pac, released February 13, 1996 on Death Row record label. 2pac is known to be one of the greatest hip hop artists of all times. As seen on the explicit parental guidance certificate the album is full of bad language, violence and sexual content.

The main image is placed on a dark, black background which represents the darkness which may be presented in the rappers lyrical content. The way the album cover has been designed is very simple with a maximum of four different colours used. This is effective as it allows the audience to focus on specific things such as the name of the album ‘All Eyes On Me’ which is written in a bright red text. The piece of text stands out as it is placed on the bottom corner alone on a dark background. Also, by keeping the design simple it allows the audience to identify the name of the artist which is placed on the top right corner and is typed in large text to make it stand out. The use of a mid-shot is useful as it allows the reader understand the emotion of the rapper. In addition to this the artist is looking straight at the audience which helps us visualise his emotions

Magazine Front Cover Analysis.

Vibe Magazine

Audience and Institution

Vibe is a magazine full of music and entertainment news and updates. The magazine was founded by producer Quincy Jones. The magazine mainly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The magazine’s target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop and R&B culture.

Representation

The cover features Hip Hop icons Eminem and 50 Cent e that are stereotypical ideologies of rappers. In addition, Eminem and 50 cent are hip hop legends making them some of the biggest names in the industry. They are artist to which the audience is familiar with. Both artists are looking straight at the reader to establish a
relationship with them. However, by giving dirty looks they maintain the perception of being violent or superior which again stereotypes the artists. Both rappers are dressed in baggy clothing which may attract the urban, street, dance type social groups due to the fashion sense of the rappers.

Typography

The masthead is written in a bold and black text which again contrasts from the white background. Nothing extreme is done however the simple use of colour contrasting is effective as it makes certain things stand out. Also the masthead is written largely on the top of the page right above the artist to make it recognisable towards the audience. Above the masthead the cover line provided is written in lower case. The use of lower case letters gives a less formal effect, similarly the use of the colour orange is more informal which may mean the magazine is suitable for all ages but especially teenagers. It may be suitable for teenagers as it has connotations of youth as it is vibrant.

Magazine Front Cover Analysis

The Source magazine front cover analysis

Masthead: The masthead for this magazine is placed in the middle at the top of the cover, it stretched across the whole of the page. It is in a large font as it allows the audience immediately recognise the the name of magazine. It id more recognisable as the strong bright red font contrasts to the dark background colour.

Selling Line: This issue does not have a selling line however one of the main attraction is in the coverline. It is bright red which contrast with the background colour which is a darker use of colour. This will draw the readers attention to this. This is so that the readers can have a further insight into the issue.

Cover line: The cover line “THE GAME suicide is not an option” is placed in the bottom left of the magazine, and written in bold text. It is extremely noticeable as it is placed right next to the gun which is a main tool in the front cover. Also it is placed next to the main image of the rapper 'The Game'.

Main Image: The main image is of rap icon The Game. They used this artist instead of other artists because he is a well recognised musician in the hip hop industry. This helps to get more of an audience. The image used is a powerful one as it portrays the game's feelings and emotions. The use of a mid-shot is used to emphasise on this. Also, The image is placed in the middle and is the largest object on the page. The image is also infront of the masthead which makes it the main focus. This is done as the magazine is a well known one meaning no one really needs to see the name of the magazine. Instead the audience is better of seeing the main image as that will be the main attraction. In addition to this the skin colour of the rapper contrast from the colour of the text, making both the text and main image stand out.

Nas Album Cover Analysis

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead

Nas Hip Hop Is Dead Album Cover Implies Death. This is shown in either a Literal meaning or hidden meaning. However, the concept of death is a definite factor in this album cover. By including the dark background could suggest that nas is in a graveyard implying the misfortune of death. In this case the rapper is mourning the death of 'Hip Hop'. Also by adding the image of a flower adds the idea of death.

How can hip hop be dead? In this case the rapper might be mourning about some who has passed away in the hip hop industry, if not he could be mourning

Death of someone within the hip hop industry? His relation to them? Not likely to be perpetrator, Why lay flowers an grave if he is

Analysis of Album Cover

DMX - Year Of The Dog

The album came out in the early years of the 21st century where being a hardcore rapper was no longer a rare site. This album is full of hardcore rap which includes a lot of violent lyrics. By looking at the front cover the audience can immediately identify what the genre of the album is as all of the stereotypical hip-hop/Rap conventions are portrayed in this image. For example, the mis-en -scene of the album cover is very rough, urban and "ghetto". The rapper is placed in a dark, intimidating area which shows the audience that the rapper's music is of aggressive and violent content.

Also the clothes that the rapper is wearing adds to the idea that the album is rough and aggressive. The rapper (DMX) is wearing a black hooded jumper and an army style body-warmer. Wearing a black hooded jumper could imply that the album is about criminal based activities, This is because young criminals are usually known to wear black hoodies covering most of their face allowing them to be involved within criminal activities. Also by wearing a military coloured body-warmer suggests that DMX is a violent rapper as military colours represent war.

In addition to the clothing of the artist the uses of imagery is very effective. In the centre of the album cover an image of a muscular dog(pit-bull) with its mouth wide open looking vicious and dangerous. This shows a contrast between the rapper and the dog.

On the bottom right corner a parental advisory stamp is placed. 'Strong language, sexual + violent content. From reading this, the audience will know what the album vividly contains. Also by creating a white stamp helps the audience identify it easier as the colour contrast from the dark background image.

Target Audience

Most Rappers/MC's want their music to be hear by everyone however that it is not the case when it comes to rap music. This is due to the usage of violence, mysogony, bad language etc. Rappers have a wide range of fans but because of this many people dislike the music rappers make. A huge majority of the people who dislike rap music are females.

I am going to be careful whilst creating this piece of music as i do not want to offend any type of social group. Therefore i am making the song suitable for all races, ages and set towards both males and females.

Target Audience:
Age - 14+
Gender - Male/Female
Ethnicity - All Races
Social Groups - Dancer, Rappers, urban "swagger"
